Not “The Onion”: Top Spender Tom Steyer Condemns Citizens United

On Tuesday, LA Times reporter Sarah Wire tweeted what may be the funniest news about Tom Steyer we have ever seen…

You read that right: Tom Steyer, billionaire hedge fund manager and the top political contributor of the 2014 and 2016 cycles, wants to get big money out of politics.

This is the same Tom Steyer who, just a few months ago, would not rule out spending $200 million this cycle:

It is also the same Tom Steyer who has dodged questions about his political spending on a regular basis:

Now, Steyer doesn’t have to worry about the impact of the Citizens United ruling either way. When If he runs for governor of California in 2018, Steyer will have no problem affording a statewide campaign.

Now, ending big money in politics would certainly hurt Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s chances at winning the Democratic primary for governor. It would not, however, hurt a candidate who can bankroll his own campaign.
